Purpose
BIOS MATER is a European research and innovation project accelerating the adoption of advanced bio-based materials in construction. By focusing on durability, safety, and circularity, the project supports the shift towards a low-emission, sustainable built environment. Launched in 2025, BIOS MATER brings together 22 partners from ten EU countries, including research institutes, universities, industry leaders, and public institutions.
While bio-based materials offer a sustainable alternative to conventional, high-carbon construction materials, their broader use is often hindered by challenges such as limited durability, fire resistance, mechanical strength, and high production costs. Regulatory and market barriers further restrict their widespread adoption. By developing and testing novel bio-based materials through real-world demonstrations and integrated assessments, BIOS MATER's holistic approach spans from material innovation to stakeholder engagement and policy support—offering a promising pathway towards climate-neutral construction.

Approach and Outputs
BIOS MATER will develop four bio-based products along distinct production routes:
- flooring tiles
- interior wall panels
- exterior cladding made from fibre-reinforced bio-resins
- foam-based tiles for drywall
These materials will be tested under real-world conditions to assess durability, energy efficiency, and circularity potential. BIOS MATER fosters collaboration across the construction value chain by creating training resources and communication strategies that raise awareness, empower the workforce, and inform policy development to accelerate the uptake of circular, bio-based solutions in construction.
A central outcome will be the real-world application of these products in a DemoPark near Madrid, showcasing their compatibility with current construction practices and regulatory frameworks. The installations will include sandwich-structured flooring elements, wall panels, flooring tiles, façade cladding, and drywall panels — all assessed for their performance in real-life conditions.
In alignment with major EU initiatives, such as the Circular Economy Action Plan and the New European Bauhaus, the project demonstrates how bio-based materials can provide a realistic foundation for the future construction in Europe. As a project partner, Bauhaus Earth leads stakeholder mapping, coordinates a multi-actor approach, and facilitates knowledge exchange. We also contribute to professional training, demonstration planning and implementation, and the development of policy recommendations.
