Purpose & Impact

SAFARI YA MBAO – Logistics of Biomass for Construction in East Africa explores how regional supply chains can support the wider use of sustainable, bio-based construction materials, especially timber. The project focuses on the logistics, processing, and coordination needed to connect available timber resources with growing construction markets.

By improving supply-chain efficiency, identifying strategic processing and logistics hubs, and strengthening connections between forestry, industry, and construction, Safari ya Mbao aims to accelerate bio-based construction across the region while identifying opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and create local and regional economic value.

Research

Our research examines material flows, processing capacities, logistics costs, trade corridors, and the suitability of timber products for construction. It will identify key bottlenecks and opportunities across the supply chain, assess carbon impacts, and develop recommendations for more efficient and resilient regional supply systems.

Partnership

SAFARI YA MBAO brings together researchers, policymakers, developers, architects, and supply-chain actors to build practical knowledge and support collaboration. By working with regional first movers and industry partners, we seek to translate research into actionable solutions for scaling bio-based construction across East Africa.
