The Essays

Relearning how to build within planetary boundaries requires bold impulses for both thought and action. This is why we have partnered with JOVIS Verlag to bring thinkers, makers, and doers in the building sector two new series of publications: the Bauhaus Earth Essays and Manuals.

The Bauhaus Earth Essays, launched in 2024, feature a wide range of critical voices addressing the complete overhaul of the built environment system that the climate crisis demands of us.

Toward Re-Entanglement:
A Charter for the City and the Earth

Philipp Misselwitz and Alan Organschi

The first essay, Toward Re-Entanglement: A Charter for the City and the Earth, is a call to action. It challenges all those with a role in the conception, production, operation, and governance of the building sector to address the systemic ecological, climatic, and social impacts incurred by its activities. Twelve principles of “re-entanglement” guide the re-design of the entire life cycle of the urban realm: the re-formation and re-materialization of the physical artifacts that comprise it, the reconfiguration of the socioeconomic structures that underpin it, and the re-engagement of the bioregions that might sustainably supply it. In this way, our unprecedented convergence of environmental and social crises offers us powerful opportunities for systemic change.

The Manuals

The Bauhaus Earth Manuals present contemporary projects that take on the challenge of transforming the built environment, offering their experiences as both practical guides and catalysts for new ideas. The series explores a wide range of geographic contexts, examining how the construction of the future can rediscover a pluralistic material and design language while meeting its ecological responsibilities. A key element of the manuals is an open-source chapter, where the authors distill their experiences and provide them as a foundation for future work.

Back to Earth:
Urbanization without Depletion

Studio Suddo Neuve

Back to Earth: Urbanization without Depletion sees itself as a contribution to the transformation of the construction sector and, in this spirit, focuses on building with earth in the West African region. The history of this building material in the area points to great potential; however, widespread use of cement and steel has pushed the material out of the cities. In addition to discussing urbanization and construction processes in the region, the publication delves into the practical aspects of building with earth and explores a construction method that challenges the dominance of hollow concrete blocks. Through text, photography, technical drawings, and interviews, the architectural collective Studio Suddo Neuve compiles its experiences with contemporary earth construction and aims to pass on the principles it has developed as a handbook within the publication. With detailed instructions for the production and use of earth blocks, the work makes a practical contribution to the increasingly urgent debate on the interaction between climate and the built environment. At the same time, it promotes the acceptance of earth as a core material for regenerative construction in both the West African and global contexts.

We look forward to the publication of the first Bauhaus Earth Manual at the end of 2024.
